Does it earn a slot? It IS the slot. The grab-escape family — butterfly knife, ice pick, pocket knife (some accounts add the screwdriver and butter knife) — all do the identical, match-saving thing: when Michael grabs you, the knife is consumed and you break free almost instantly. One use. Highlighted blue on pickup. X on PC, Triangle on PlayStation.
Why it's mandatory
Most civilian deaths are grabs, not damage — and a grab without a knife is a number-sequence struggle you'll usually lose. Michael players themselves compare these knives to Dead by Daylight's Decisive Strike and call a knifed grab nearly unwinnable for him. It's also one of the two hard counters to Reality Tear.
The free one
Lynda level 10 unlocks the Pocket Knife as a starting item — spawn with your seatbelt on, every match, forever. The single best account grind in the game; details at Lynda and the loadout guide.
Usage notes
- It triggers on your grab only — a teammate's grab needs your shove, not your knife.
- Replace it the moment it's spent; treat "no knife" as a status effect worth fixing before the next objective.
- If Michael knows you're knifed (he watched you pick it up), expect him to hit first, grab second — the knife shapes his play even unspent.
